Redding, Shasta County
The Sundial Bridge opened in Redding on July 4, 2004, carrying walkers and cyclists across the Sacramento River at Turtle Bay. Architect Santiago Calatrava hung its glass deck from a single white pylon 217 feet tall, tilted so that its shadow works as a sundial. No part of the bridge stands in the water, a design choice meant to protect the salmon spawning beds below.
